According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the top 10 cancers for men are prostate, lung, colon, rectum, bladder, malignant melanoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, kidney, mouth & throat, leukemia and pancreatic, in that order. Of the top three (prostate, lung and colon), prostate is the single most common cancer, while lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death.
Prostate cancer, the most commonly diagnosed male cancer, occurs most often in African-Americans. (Scientists are still searching for the reason.) In the U.S. in 2007, 223,307 men were diagnosed with this type of cancer, while 29,093 died.
Lung cancer, the deadliest type of male cancer, affects smokers more than any other segment of the population. (African-Americans are also at a slightly higher risk.) Approximately 90% of U.S. male lung cancer deaths are caused by tobacco usage; in 2007 alone, 88,329 men died from lung cancer.
Colon cancer, usually diagnosed in individuals 50 or older, is the third most common type of cancer for men. In 2007, 27,004 U.S. men (out of 72,755 new cases) died from colon cancer. This type of cancer affects all age groups and ethnicities.
If you believe you may be at risk for colon cancer, lung cancer or prostate cancer – or for any of the other common types of cancer listed above – you should take out a cancer insurance policy to protect your financial future. Cancer insurance policies provide a lump sum benefit upon first diagnosis of a covered cancer, allowing you to pay for treatments, living expenses or any other needs.
